LCL shipping (less than container load): pay only for your own cargo

If your cargo doesn't fill a full container, you don't have to pay for the whole thing. With LCL shipping, cargo from several shippers travels in one shared container, and each shipper pays based on the volume or weight of their own cargo.

How it works

What is LCL and how does it work?

In LCL shipping, your cargo is loaded at the consolidation warehouse (CFS) into a container together with other shippers' cargo. At the destination port, the container is opened at the warehouse and each consignee's cargo is separated.

  1. Drop-off at the CFS

You deliver the cargo to the consolidation warehouse at the origin.

  2. Shared loading

Your cargo is loaded into a shared container alongside other shippers' cargo.

  3. Sea freight

The container travels by ship to the destination port.

  4. Deconsolidation at destination

At the destination warehouse, each consignee's cargo is separated.

  5. Clearance and delivery

The cargo is cleared and delivered to you.

How cost is calculated

How is LCL cost calculated?

LCL charges are based on cubic meters or tonnes, whichever is greater (W/M). As a rule, 1000 kg is treated as equivalent to 1 cubic meter.

Cargo volume2.5 CBM
Cargo weight800 kg (0.8 tonnes)

Because your cargo travels alongside other shipments, proper packing matters even more.

  • List the exact dimensions and weight of each package in the packing list
  • Mark fragile goods with the appropriate label

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about less than container load (LCL)

What is the minimum volume for LCL?

The minimum charge is usually based on 1 cubic meter. Details are confirmed when you request a quote.

How long does LCL from China to Iran take?

It takes slightly longer than a full container because of the time needed to consolidate cargo at origin and deconsolidate it at destination. The exact time is confirmed when you request a quote.

At what volume does a full container become more cost-effective?

Will my cargo be damaged next to other shippers' cargo?

With proper packing and correct stowage at the consolidation warehouse, the risk of damage is low. For extra peace of mind, you can also take out cargo insurance.
